The redesign and expansion project of the Sparkasse Arena Sports Hall in Bolzano, commissioned to Progetto CMR, proposes a regeneration intervention focused on innovation, functional flexibility, and sustainability, with the aim of strengthening the facility’s role as an urban space open to the city.
.
A distinctive feature is the new wave-shaped façade, inspired by the historic name “Palaonda”, composed of alternating opaque backlit polycarbonate surfaces and transparent glazed areas, giving the building both permeability and a strong architectural identity.
.
The project includes the construction of a new regulation-size ice rink at basement level, designed for sports competitions and ice activities, along with dedicated athlete facilities and support spaces. The ground floor hosts public functions and seating stands, while the first floor integrates a panoramic lounge, restaurant, bar, and modular skyboxes, also designed for events and complementary uses.
.
The design incorporates environmental sustainability strategies, including an extensive green roof and photovoltaic systems, aimed at reducing energy consumption and improving the overall performance of the building.
The Sparkasse Arena is thus redefined as a multifunctional sports hub, combining competitive sports, events, and public services within a continuous space open to the city.
