Location Rimini, RN, Italy

Date 2026

Rimini Airport, one of the main gateways to Italy’s Riviera, is the focus of a new integrated masterplan developed by Progetto CMR.

The project transforms the airport from a functional infrastructure into a new urban district, combining the redevelopment of the existing terminal with new buildings and infrastructures through a progressive strategy that ensures full operational continuity and long-term flexibility.

The concept is based on three key drivers—Roman heritage, nature, and aerodynamics—expressed through arches, continuous greenery, and fluid geometries that strengthen the relationship between airport and territory, creating a coherent architectural identity rooted in place.

The masterplan brings together the renewed terminal, new commercial and directional volumes, an intermodal area, a multi-storey car park, and a pedestrian bridge with integrated retail and food functions, conceived as a single interconnected system where flows, functions, and public spaces overlap.

A defining feature is the “Air Park”, an elevated green roof that transforms the parking structure into a layered public landscape directly connected to the terminal. This element extends the airport experience beyond its operational boundaries, establishing a continuous spatial and visual dialogue with the city.

Through a consistent language of transparency, lightness, and infrastructural clarity, the project gives Rimini Airport a new and recognizable urban identity, repositioning it as a contemporary gateway for the Riviera.
