The Rethinking of Office Space

Edited by the Department for Instrumental Resources Presidency

In recent years, we have seen public administrations pay increasing attention to the organisation and management of spaces used for public offices. The need to limit public spending, the opportunities that new technologies offer, as well as the need to increase productivity by making work more efficient and effective are leading public administrations to experiment and put into effect plans and interventions to redesign offices and related spaces. The book was inspired by the concrete experiences relative to the new offices of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (in Piazza San Silvestro), for which a specific project for planning and designing the work spaces in the office was created using innovative methods and instruments.
The objective was to analyse and determine the needs of the spaces within the various organisational structures, define efficient types of distribution for each role and optimise the order of the new offices, while conforming to the operational methods and the innovative criteria for using the work areas according to established standards and parameters.
As a result, the space planning allows for combining the quality of life of the person using it (according to a customer-oriented approach) with the rational and optimal use of the building, based on new criteria and values (recognisability, transparency, flexibility, hospitality, availability) that represent an additional sign of change in the way that public administrations operate.
